Class Journal Week 10

Hayden Hinsch's Responses

  1. I would like my teammates to be communicative and reliable. It's the worst when someone in a group doesn't show up for a time to meet or doesn't let you know ehre they're at with the work. I think it goes without saying that it's not fun to have a teammate that doesn't do any work. I understand if a teammate doesn't understand what to do, but I really appreciate effort. If everyone is putting in an effort, even if you don't understand what is going on in the class, the effort means something to the team as a whole.
  2. Communication and consistency make teamwork go smoothly. When a teammate and I have decided when we are going to work together and stick to that it really helps. It also helps to just set a time to meet right away to get working on the assignment so we can just do the finishing touches near the end.
  3. I think the thing that impedes teamwork the most is just not meeting. If you meet with your teammates, you're bound to get some work done. The more you meet, the more you get done;it's simple.

Mary Balducci's Responses

  1. I would want for my teammates to be available if I have questions about the work, and also to feel like they can ask me questions. I would want us all to share equal amounts of the work, and to be able to get in touch with each other if we need help with something.
  2. I think communication makes teamwork go smoothly. If we are all able to tell each other what we're working on and how we're doing it, I think it helps everyone better understand the project being done. This also includes being responsive to questions and figuring out who is responsible for each aspect of the project together.
  3. I think teamwork does not go smoothly when members of the team are not responsive. I think it's harder when I'm not entirely sure what another person in my group is doing, or if I have a question and they are not available to answer it.

Zachary Van Ysseldyk's Responses

  1. As far as characteristics for a teammate, I value those who do not procrastinate and plan out how the assignment will get done to avoid unnecessary stress. Stringing along the same thought, I think that communication is crucial so that every person on the team is on the same page. I would also value those who assume the same amount of work as everybody else so that we all get a fair and well deserved grade.
  2. Bleeding in from question 1, I think that solid communication and a laid out plan will help the project go smoothly. Knowing when things will get done and how long they will take will help for smooth project completion.
  3. On the other hand, poor communication will greatly negatively affect a project. People might be doing the same things, people might not understand what they are doing which leads to frustration and division among the team. Also if somebody does not put in a sufficient amount of effort, this will anger others as the person who didn't do the the work should not receive the same letter grade.

Dina Bashoura's Responses

  1. I would like a partner who is well equipped in computer science, since I am lagging in that department. I also would like my partner to be good at communicating so that we can distinguish who should do what task and work together to make the overall project flow.
  2. Things like communication, trust, reliability, and good team chemistry make teamwork go smoothly.
  3. Things like lack of communication, doing sections not assigned to you or not assigning sections at all, not showing up to group meetings, and not being prepared when group meetings take place are things that make teamwork fail.

Eddie Azinge's Responses

  1. I don't find myself requiring very much from my teammates, just that the work that they hold themselves accountable for gets done at some point or another, and that inconsistencies in their work do not end up propogating upwards and affecting the status of the entire group, specifically because everyone has their own circumstances and priorities; as long as they deliver on their promises they're good in my book.
  2. Communication is key to teamwork; but trust and flexibility also play huge roles as well.
  3. Somewhat antithetical to the last question, a lack of trust and need to keep constant tabs on the members of the project often leads to rushed work, resentment, and dissidence within the team.

Cazinge (talk) 15:46, 6 November 2017 (PST)

Edward Bachoura's Response

  1. I am looking for teammates that are flexible with their schedules so that we can actually find time to meet. Also, looking for teammates that are accountable for themselves.
  2. I find it important that whenever you work on a team, there should be some fun involved with the assignment, no matter the topic. When everybody is happy, it is usually easier to do the work at hand.
  3. Teamwork doesn't go smoothly when someone is unaccountable and makes themselves become more a negative weight rather than a help on the team.

Ebachour (talk) 16:54, 6 November 2017 (PST)

Antonio Porras's Responses

  1. What kinds of characteristics do you want in your teammates, and why? I look for teammates who are willing to take initiative and are able to communicate effectively about what needs to get done and what needs to be changed. Team members who aren't willing to speak their minds makes the process difficult and I look for these qualities because I want our group to achieve our goal and do so effectively.
  2. What kinds of things make teamwork go smoothly? Communication is extremely important in my opinion and there has to be someone taking charge with respect to delegating some tasks. I actually prefer not to be in this position but instead delegated a task because once I have some responsibility I take it seriously as it represents my work ethic.
  3. What kinds of things make teamwork not go so smoothly? Team members who put off work put a lot of pressure on the entire team. In addition, teams that don't have a uniform direction can be misdirected and may even miss the target in terms of goals.

Emma Tyrnauer's Responses

  1. The kind of characteristics that I want in my teammates are good communication skills and responsibility over their contributions (in terms of meeting deadlines and asking for help when it is needed). Furthermore, I think being detail oriented is important in group setting to ensure everything is being completed properly.
  2. Good communication and collaboration makes teamwork go smoothly. The ability to divide and conquer is very important so that while the assignment is completed in a group setting and collaboration occurs consistently throughout the process, the strengths of each team member are being used and emphasized.
  3. Bad communication and a lack of responsibility make teamwork go not so smoothly. Also, not being able to trust your teammates and ask for help when it is needed represents poor teamwork.

Blair Hamilton's Response

  1. What kinds of characteristics do you want in your teammates, and why?
    • For a teammate I would like organization when it comes to deadlines, but also able to work independently of the group. Being able to disperse tasks is very helpful when it comes to big projects, so having a teammate who appreciated independent work, with good communication can be super helpful. I also would love a teammate who can critique my work as well in order to make sure the project as a whole gets done well and accurately.
  2. What kinds of things make teamwork go smoothly?
    • In order for the project to smoothly, communication is a big part. If a partner is being silent or not asking questions when he/she is confused, then the project suffers.
  3. What kinds of things make teamwork not go so smoothly?
    • Partners who don't contribute, don't ask questions and don't follow up make projects go not-so-smoothly. Deadlines and helping the entire group project makes it go quicker and much easier!

QLanners Responses

  1. There are a number of characteristics that I want in a good teammate, but among the most important ones are accountability and good communication. Group projects are much more effective when all of the partners in the group do the tasks assigned to them when they say they will. Furthermore, when problems do arise (as they always do), good communication skills can help limit these problems and make them much more manageable.
  2. Perhaps the most important thing to make teamwork go smoothly is effective planning. If all of the tasks can be mapped out, and everyone is given a job to complete by a certain deadline, the overall project will progress much faster and with fewer complications.
  3. There are several things that can make teamwork not go smoothly, but poor communication is definitely the number one culprit. Without communication, it is impossible to even set times to meet and work on the project. And without meetings and communication, team members become confused as to what they should be doing and that results in partners either not doing their work, or doing a poor job of it.

Arash Lari's Responses

  1. I want my teammate and I to be able to have open, honest communication with each other and both of a drive and motivation to submit quality work. If we agree on the latter, and according to the former, then any other issues that come up would be resolved easily.
  2. As mentioned previously, communication is vital. To add to that, I would say reaching an agreement on the work dynamic is important as well. It's important that each member of the team agrees on what their responsibilities are in order to achieve optimal performance.
  3. Again, if teammates don't communicate with each other and try to organize time well it can lead to a lot of stressed out last minute work.

Corinne Wong's Responses

  1. I want my teammates to have dedication, so I know they will put in work on the project. I also want my teammates to care about their work, so they are not just mindlessly doing stuff, but actually putting in effort to the project. I would also want my teammates to be helpful, so I know I could rely on them if I had a question or needed some clarification.
  2. Cooperation, so we can all contribute ideas that are equally valued, and we can all contribute productively in some way to the project. Another thing is communication, which is very important because then there is no misunderstanding. Communication also allows for clear direction and efficient productivity when everyone knows what they need to do and when and how they need to do it.
  3. When teammates don’t help each other with the work then they do not become as productive, and their work is not as efficient. Moreover, if they do not have good organization of teammate roles, then the work is unclear, and there is a lot of confusion. A lack of effort and communication also do not contribute well to a good team; both are key factors to having a smooth running and productive system.

Simon Wroblewski's Reflection

  1. What kinds of characteristics do you want in your teammates, and why?
    • Communication and hard work are more than enough to start any job with a group.
  2. What kinds of things make teamwork go smoothly?
    • Communication, clarity, trust, and accountability are all things a good team should have.
  3. What kinds of things make teamwork not go so smoothly?
    • When a team does not have communication, clarity, trust, and accountability; it falls, and things do not go according to plan.

John Lopez's Responses

  1. When it comes to the characteristics I want in my teammates, I want a few things. Primarily, I want each member to understand how much work they must put in to the project and I want them to not only execute the required work, but go above and beyond. I have been in several group projects where I have carried incompetent team members and performed most of the work. Next, I want good attitudes. Even if the task given to us isn't the most exciting, or if it is particularly challenging, I want each member to behave like it is the most important assignment of their lives. Finally, I believe that a little bit communication can go a long way in a good team. Effective communication can solve problems and get tasks done faster.
  2. As I stated above, communication is effective at problem-solving which makes assignments done faster. However, in order to avoid problems, effective planning and delegation of tasks is necessary. Every person needs to understand what they are going to do. Furthermore, there must be a certain level of trust that the person is going to execute their task. If this fails, then every team needs to have a backup plan, or a sort of leadership to make sure that if a problem occurs, the team can work around it.
  3. Perhaps one of the things that can cause teamwork to not go smoothly is distractions. Whenever members of a team are occupied on things that are irrelevant to the task, it makes getting that task done longer and harder. Furthermore, I believe that a lack of understanding about the task can cause teamwork to not go smoothly. This means that although the members can have their hearts in the right place, their lack of knowledge of the task can unintentionally cause problems. In addition, whenever a member of the team is not pulling their own weight, the structure of the team breaks down as other members fulfill their roles, meaning their own jobs can't be done as well. Therefore, whenever a teammate does not perform their designated task, the whole team suffers.

  1. I want my teammates to care about the outcome of the project of course. It is important that everyone on the team is aiming to do good, diligent work, rather than sitting back and throwing something together because the project's goals don't matter to them. It's also important that no one takes over in a way that doesn't allow for other people to contribute. It is great to have a leader, but it is awful to be a part of team where one person doesn't trust anyone else with the work that needs to be done.
  2. Teamwork goes smoothly when everyone has a specific job, sets out to complete that job, and continuously checks in with their teammates. It also goes smoothly when people are friendly, or at the very least know how to communicate in a way that is geared towards understanding another person's point of view, rather than just trying to assert their opinion so that other people agree with them.
  3. Teamwork doesn't go smoothly when one person or several people slack off and other people have to pick up extra work. This makes for a bad dynamic within the group, and it ruins the trust between teammates. If you aren't able to complete the work that is asked of you, you need to communicate with your teammates, and figure out how else you can contribute. People are generally very understanding, as long as you are genuine/have good intentions.
