Favorite Gene Page

To begin this assignment, Quinn and I chose our favorite gene during class. We searched on the SGD database by clicking on the function tab and then selecting all phenotypes. I was interested in genes that helped improve fitness so I looked into that feature and found ADA2. I thought it would be a good gene to look at since we had previously talked a lot about transcription and this gene is involved in this process. We then decided to do some research on the gene individually so that when we met up in person, we would have all the information we needed to add to our webpage. On Monday we met up and began working on the webpage. Quinn downloaded the starter files onto his computer and I had my computer open to look up information. We used the Bootstrap website for presentation formats and began answering the assignment questions on the webpage. For question 1, we thought it might be helpful to display the information in a table and to link to both the database and the specific gene page (this code was taken from Bootstrap). We navigated the four databases (SGD itself, NCBI Gene Database, Ensembl, and UniProt) to answer all of the assignment questions, however SGD seemed to provide us with the most information. While we kept most of our webpage fairly simple in design, we decided to use the carousel feature on Bootstrap to represent the pros, cons, and unique features of each database. Quinn and I managed to finish most of the assignment during the two hours we met due to the fact that we had done research before meeting. After finishing up, he checked for any errors and uploaded the file to his wiki. I then reviewed the file and linked to it from my webpage.

Acknowledgements

  1. I worked with my homework partner Quinn Lanners in class. We met face-to-face on Monday to construct our webpage.
  2. Dr. Dondi introduced html and Bootstrap during class
  3. Dr. Dahlquist introduced the four gene databases and how to analyze their quality
  4. While I worked with the people noted above, this individual journal entry was completed by me and not copied from another source.
