Keyword Searches

Basic Keyword Search

  • PubMed
    • Original keywords: "saccharomyces cerevisiae cold shock" with 134 results.
    • Keywords added to narrow down search: "microarray" which narrowed down the search to 6 results.
  • Google Scholar
    • Original keywords: "saccharomyces cerevisiae "cold shock"" with 6,520 results.
    • Keywords added to narrow down search: "microarray" which narrowed the search to 2,090 results.
  • Web of Science
    • Original keywords: "saccharomyces cerevisiae cold shock" with 200 results.
    • Keywords added to narrow down search: "microarray" which narrowed down the search to 15 results.

Advanced Keyword Search

  • PubMed
    • The most useful functions were putting key words into different search fields which resulted in a total of 20 results when putting "saccharomyces cerevisiae" and "cold shock" in the two search boxes.
  • Google Scholar
    • The most useful function was being able to use the different search boxes of "with all of the words", "with the exact phrase", and "with at least one of the words". This allowed for me to prioritize certain words over others. Secondly, it allowed me to decide whether or not those words would be in the title or the article. These functions in addition to the easy use of the advanced search made it efficient to narrow down the search to 16 results.
  • Web of Science
    • I received 177 results using their advanced search function. However, compared to the other advanced search functions it required me to structure the advanced search myself rather than having me input the key words. I found this much more difficult to use compared to the other advanced searches.

Acknowledgements

  1. Met outside of class with Quinn Lanners to discuss any questions we had prior to meeting and throughout the process of completing the Week 11 assignment.
  2. Recieved in class direction from Dr. Dahlquist prior to working on the assignment.

While I worked with the people noted above, this individual journal entry was completed by me and not copied from another source.
