Electronic Notebook Week 7

  • Zachary Van Ysseldyk and I met together immediately after class to collaborate about the deliverables of this assignment.
  • It at first seemed daunting to invoke the Ajax Starter code on our page, but Dr. Dionisio clarified this in class.
  • Although I am unable to explain exactly how the Ajax Starter code worked in order to load the data from UniProt and SGD to our html page, I can tell you how I got there.
  • First I downloaded Node to my computer in order to invoke the npm install command on my computer's terminal. In opposition with the process in class, I could do this from my computer's terminal rather than the Node terminal directly. After this I ran the npm start command which caused my computer to run as a web server so my browser could access the html file via Localhost(my computer).
  • I then installed atom, because that was the code editor we used in class, making it easier for me to get the same results.
  • In class, I noticed how Blair Hamilton had the image on her html page linked directly to a png file within her zip file. This was one of the notes that I found on my talk page so I used the same format to have the image source of our age draw from the BRO1.jpg that is in the zip file.
  • I then ran the page in the browser and it worked!
  • Next Zach and I implemented the "flexbox" which we were shown in class in order to make our page a little more aesthetically pleasing. We next used the "grid" code from Bootstrap(also shown in class) in order to center the data on our webpage. We liked the results we got but had some trouble with the code font of the DNA and Amino Acid sequences. In order to fix this I placed the < code > in different places surrounding the sequences in order to have it wrap around exactly what we wanted.
  • We finally corrected the references to be in alignment with APA citation guidelines, and created in-text citations.
  • We also created a gene summary from the information on SGD.
  • I looked on Bootstrap to find out how to create a caption for our image, which we did create.
  • Finally we deleted the package-lock.json and node_modules from our zip file and uploaded it to the wiki.
  • Most of this information and "how-to" was explained in class, which was really helpful.
  • We made sure our acknowledgments section was spelled correctly!

Acknowledgments

  1. Hayden and Zach worked together on multiple occasions in the computer lab and on Campus to synthesize our favorite gene page.
  2. We utilized the Bootstrap documentation section.
  3. We used information from the biological databases listed in references.
  4. Utilized Week 4 assignment webpage for assignment direction.
  5. We utilized the Week 7 assignment webpage for assignment direction.
  6. Dr. Dionisio helped explain the functions of Node.js in class.
  7. While I worked with the people noted above, this individual journal entry was completed by me and not copied from another source.Hhinsch (talk) 22:03, 16 October 2017 (PDT)
