For this assignment we were given the task of editing our favorite gene page to make it more aesthetically pleasing as well as integrating two of the four Ajax sources—one XML and one JSON—from ajax-starter into our page. As Dr. Dondi went over how to integrate the Ajax sources step-by-step (also outlined on the Week 7 assignment page) during class on Thursday 10/12, Quinn followed along and added Uniprot and the SGD database to our page. After class, Quinn and I divided up the work so that I would focus on making a carousel display with images and captions and adding a small summary paragraph of our gene (which we had missed in the first submission). For the carousel display, I searched for images that were not subject to copyright through an advanced search filter on google chrome and then used the bootstrap carousel option with captions. I ended up having a lot of trouble with formatting the carousel because I think it might have been interfering with the one that was previously representing our database breakdown information. After doing as much as I could, I uploaded the draft (which can be accessed below) and Quinn helped determine what was wrong. After reviewing his changes, I identified that my error was putting each caption under each carousel item when all the captions had to be grouped together after the entire carousel (mistake can be seen in the rough draft file below). Quinn made a drop down menu for the database breakdown and reformatted the page with grid and flexbox. He also changed some of the headings and fixed font width for the gene and protein sequences (as was suggested during class). The final draft of our page was then uploaded to wiki (can be accessed below).

  1. I worked with my homework partner Quinn Lanners for this assignment. We split up the work and were available over text if either of us had any questions.
  2. Dr. Dondi for reviewing Bootstrap, HTML, and the web API preview section of the assignment
  3. While I worked with the people noted above, this individual journal entry was completed by me and not copied from another source.
