PubMed, Google Scholar, and Web of Science Analyses

  1. Keyword search:
    • PubMed
      • I used the keywords "Saccharomyces cerevisiae" and "cold shock" got 134 results.
      • Rearranging the terms did not change the number of results, but in order to narrow the search, I added the search term "microarray" which yielded 6 results.
    • Google Scholar
      • I used the keywords "Saccharomyces cerevisiae", "cold shock", and "microarray" and got 15,500 results.
      • All of the terms were useful in this case. When rearranged in different orders, the terms still yielded the same number of results.
    • Web of Science
      • I used the keywords "Saccharomyces cerevisiae" and "cold shock" and got 200 results.
      • In order to narrow down the search, I used the "search within results for..." function and added the term "microarray" and this left me with 15 results to choose from. Choosing these words in different orders did not make a difference.
  2. Advanced search functions for each of these three databases/tools and answer the following:
    • PubMed
      • Because my previous search with just the keywords yielded a small list, narrowing the search did not do anything. I used the advance search option to specify the publication date to be between 2000-2017 and yielded the same 6 results.
    • Google Scholar
      • Using the advanced search function, I was not able to narrow down the search that well with google scholar. The only one that yielded a different number of results was narrowing the search to be within the dates of 2000-2017. This gave me 14,800 results.
    • Web of Science
      • I used the advanced search option where I narrowed the search down by topic, then specifying for only articles, then specifying for articles in english. This left me with 15 results.
