Were you aware of this case of research fraud before viewing this video?
- A. Before watching this video, I had never heard of this case of research fraud.
What are your initial reactions to hearing about this case?
- A. I was honestly disgusted to hear about this case. Knowing that multiple people unnecessarily lost their lives while trusting in a fraudulent promise was heartbreaking and upsetting to hear about, especially since the doctor who created this research scandal went relatively unscathed in terms of punishment (legally). On top of that, he is still able to work as a doctor is some fashion, which is pretty disgusting to think about.
What role did data sharing play in uncovering this fraud?
- A. The sharing of the data on the research experiment allowed for Paul Goldberg and his anonymous tip to uncover the lies that Dr. Potti created pertaining to his Rhodes scholarship. This lie caused for a deeper re-investigation into Potti's research by the labs of Duke University, thus allowing them to find the glaring mistakes/inconsistencies in Potti's research and results.
What additional information would you like to know about this case? (We will be visiting it again in subsequent weeks in the course.)
- A. What was Potti's methodology when it came to this experiment and why was no one working alongside him throughout the course of this experiment in order to verify/disprove this as it happened? Alternatively, if he was working with others in others in this experiment, did they know about his fraud and assist him in covering it up?

- I was not aware of this case before viewing the video.
- What are your initial reactions to hearing about this case?
- My initial reaction to hearing about this case was that I was appalled. As a scientist, especially as a medical doctor, I think that it is shameful and wrong to want to use people's illness or disability for personal gain. A doctor is supposed to help others, but Dr. Potti and whoever was involved did the opposite.
- What role did data sharing play in uncovering this fraud?
- Data sharing played a crucial role in uncovering this fraud. Without the technology and those who took the time to go through it, this may have never been uncovered.
- What additional information would you like to know about this case?
- I would like to know if anyone else was collaborating with Potti, knowing that it was as fraud. Even if he was smart enough to do it on his own, I would like to know how else someone may have helped him.

Were you aware of this case of research fraud before viewing this video?
While I was aware that such forms of fraud were possible, I had never heard of a case that had such big legal and ethical ramifications.
What are your initial reactions to hearing about this case?
The case made me somewhat concerned about the credibility of scientific community. It's worrisome to know that certain researchers are willing to fabricate data in such a way that would endanger the lives of so many people, and the mass coverage of this fraud could weaken the credibility of science as an institution in the public's eye.
What role did data sharing play in uncovering this fraud?
After intensely studying the data that Dr. Potti was producing in his lab, Kevin Coombs and Keith Baggerly were able to find the flaws in results of Dr. Potti's experiment.
What additional information would you like to know about this case?
I am very curious to hear Dr. Potti speak on behalf of his actions just to have a better understanding of his mindset and intentions in this fraud.

Were you aware of this case of research fraud before viewing this video?
I was not aware of this case of research fraud before viewing this video. Similar fraud stories have been brought up to me in regards to medical professionals not being 100% truthful with their work in medicine.
What are your initial reactions to hearing about this case?
Its unfortunate to say the least. People who are desperate for medical miracles are given hope in their times of trouble which understandably gets them excited when a professional in the field that they need assistance in is informing them that there is a possible cure that can save their life. Their vulnerability is taken advantage of as well as their eagerness for speedy medical treatment.
What role did data sharing play in uncovering this fraud?
It allowed for the issue in this treatment to be detected. Data sharing between multiple sources allowed for an understanding of why these negative changes are occurring and where it is occurring. This led to the catching of the issue.
What additional information would you like to know about this case? (We will be visiting it again in subsequent weeks in the course.)
I would like to hear more stories from patients that went through this case. Were there any people that got the slightest bit better? How many casualties? How did Duke address the situation in whole? Who worked with the doctor? What does the doctor have to say about this situation?

1. Were you aware of this case of research fraud before viewing this video?
I was not aware of this case before the video.
2. What are your initial reactions to hearing about this case?
I was very shocked when I first saw the video. It was both shocking and sad to see how many people this “research” effected before the truth was uncovered. It is also surprising how long it took before he was caught allowing real people suffering from cancer to be conned by him.
3. What role did data sharing play in uncovering this fraud?
Data sharing allowed for professionals to view and analyze the data in order to realize that it had been manipulated. This is essential to the process of new and innovative research, such as in this case, in order for frauds like this to be uncovered. Without data sharing, he could have gone on much longer scamming people and being praised for a discovery he did not make.
4. What additional information would you like to know about this case?
I want to know more about how the initial data evaluation missed the manipulation of numbers. They used his data to run the tests so there was no visible problem, but I would like to know why that initial evaluation used his data to begin with and could not do what the second outside company did.

- What are your initial reactions to hearing about this case?
- After hearing this case, I felt disappointed. A lot of people put most of their trust in scientists to find the cure to cancer and to hear that there was a "false cure" after it was being used on others is just inhumane.
- What role did data sharing play in uncovering this fraud?
- Data sharing played a huge role in uncovering this fraud because it allowed researchers on the case to look up in the system the data that was used and being interpreted, and analyze it themselves to detect the consistent errors. This allowed the researchers to figure out the "cancer cure" was a fraud.
- What additional information would you like to know about this case?
- I would like to know Dr. Potti's intention behind the whole thing and why he would go through with something like this.

1. Were you aware of this case of research fraud before viewing this video?
- I was not aware that any case pertaining to medical research fraud that had taken place at Duke University.
2. What are your initial reactions to hearing about this case?
- I felt that Anil had already made statements that he had found a way to help cure cancer, but as he did further research, he had to edit the data to keep himself from being embarrassed or did not want to let down cancer patients. He probably thought that the data that did not support his research was too minimal for others to notice, and therefore decided to change the data in his research.
3. What role did data sharing play in uncovering this fraud?
- Sharing the data with other doctor professionals who specialize in cancer research, allowed them to review the data and had resulted in finding odd data that didn't seem like actual data. Once multiple doctor and review committees called out the errors in the research data, then the fraud was uncovered.
4. What additional information would you like to know about this case?
- How did Duke University deal with the cancer research project, as in to know if some of the methods were reused to continue in furthering the cancer research.

- I was not aware about this case of research fraud before viewing this video.
- What are your initial reactions to hearing about this case?
- My first reaction was "How can someone do this to people who are clinging to hope?" By being able to go through with this and lie to so many patients, it deals with mentality that doesn't care about anyone. Other initial reactions involved confusion and fascination because it is crazy how many people believed this researcher.
- What role did data sharing play in uncovering this fraud?
- Data sharing played a significant role in uncovering this fraud by finding interesting errors that occurred. Two individuals did a lot of data sharing and found that there were some things that didn't add up. For instance, they stated that it looked like the data was manipulated.
- What additional information would you like to know about this case? (We will be visiting it again in subsequent weeks in the course.)
- Some additional information that would be nice is how did Duke apologize to those patients that were robbed from their hope. In addition, it is known that some patients are suing, but it would be nice to see an update of current Duke administration. Were you aware of this case of research fraud before viewing this video?
Yes, I watched and analyzed this video as a part of a class called Molecular Biology of the Genome in the spring of 2017. I became aware of this case then.
What are your initial reactions to hearing about this case?
After hearing about this case I was thoroughly disappointed in the scientist that carried out this fraud. I was always taught that science did not revolve around the idea of singularly achieving an end goal, as many other fields are. It was always instilled in me that the scientific process is what should be respected above all else. Furthermore, I was also disappointed that the scientist felt the need to perpetrate the faulty evidence for the longest time.
What role did data sharing play in uncovering this fraud?
Data sharing allowed the biostatisticians at MD Anderson to download and analyze the data for themselves. They were able to run through the data analysis steps described by Dr. Potti, realize that something was wrong, reverse engineer the data, and ultimately conclude that something was, in fact, wrong with the data that Dr. Potti had provided with his pa
What additional information would you like to know about this case? (We will be visiting it again in subsequent weeks in the course.)
I would like to know how exactly the scientists were able to reverse engineer the data to discover that it was manipulated. I am curious to know how clever Dr. Potti was with his fudging of the data, and what methods the scientists that called him out used in order to discover some values were wrong.

What are your initial reactions to hearing about this case? I was initially confused as to how the fraud could trick so many people. I found it concerning that it went so long before it was found to be fraud. I think that this was terrible for the scientific community as a whole.
What role did data sharing play in uncovering this fraud? The availability of the data allowed other researchers to review the data and eventually find the fraudulent data. If the data was not open to other researchers this fraud would have gone unnoticed and continued to give cancer patients false hope.
What additional information would you like to know about this case? (We will be visiting it again in subsequent weeks in the course.) I would like to know what about the data allowed reviewers to see that it was fraudulent.

- No I was not aware of this case before watching this video.
What are your initial reactions to hearing about this case?
- Initially, I was shocked as to how a person is able to lie and give out false hope. There was no need to do something that drastic or to fake a discovery. Dishonesty to people, including yourself, is never good.
What role did data sharing play in uncovering this fraud?
- Data sharing helped the documents be looked over and reviewed multiple times. It led to the discovery of errors that were constantly looked over. Data sharing is helpful to identify real discoveries and disqualify false data.
What additional information would you like to know about this case?
- I want to know who knew about the false data. I want to know why they did not tell the truth or if they thought they could get away with it. I want to know how this affects credibility and awareness of him.

Before viewing this video, I had not heard of this specific research fraud scandal.
What are your initial reactions to hearing about this case?
I have not heard of many instances of research fraud. When hearing of this scandal, I was shocked to hear how far this trial had gone and how many people were duped.
What role did data sharing play in uncovering this fraud?
If the data had not been shared, then Kevin Coombes and Keith Baggerly would have never been able to point out the fraudulent study. Even though the data was vast and potentially took a long time to look through, the medical community was fortunate to have people like Coombes and Baggerly to discover these types of scandals.
What additional information would you like to know about this case? (We will be visiting it again in subsequent weeks in the course.)
I know the video covered a little bit about this at the end, but I would like to know where Dr. Poti is now. That video was published in 2012. It has been 7 years, I wonder how this man's credibility is doing in this field and if he's built up his respect in the community since the incident.

Were you aware of this case of research fraud before viewing this video?
No I was not aware of this case of research fraud before viewing this video, the only case of research fraud I had known about before this was with the vaccination study.
What are your initial reactions to hearing about this case?
My initial reaction when hearing about this case was a sense of discomfort and anger. I was discomforted by the fact that someone in the scientific community would break the ethical code of research in this way, and I was angered by the fact that he would do so in a way that would harm people.
What role did data sharing play in uncovering this fraud?
Data sharing allowed for outside sources to examine the raw data for themselves and through that they were able to notice the discrepancies in the data. It is really the data sharing that enabled the discovery of the fraud.
What additional information would you like to know about this case? (We will be visiting it again in subsequent weeks in the course.)
I would be really interested to about the steps that Duke is now taking to ensure that the same mistakes and fraud will not occur again. I would also be very interested to learn about how this fraud effected the idea of the public sharing of raw data.

- No I was not of this particular case before watching this video - I have actually never heard of any case that has been fraudulent when it pertains to research in the medical field.
- What are your initial reactions to hearing about this case?
- My initial reactions were that I was happy that there was research available that would help cancer patients' survive longer; however, I was appalled in hearing that most of the data was negligent and not viable data that proves the research can help at all. It comes from a place of greed to create a facade that progress is happening and the study is working, when in fact, it hasn't for a long time.
- What role did data sharing play in uncovering this fraud?
- Data sharing among other universities and researchers/professors allowed for the truth to surface. Without it, the patients would still be undergoing these procedures/take these medications and Duke University would continue to provide funding to a research study that does not have enough proven data. Most importantly, these are peoples/patient's lives at stake over this study - their hopes aren't to necessarily "improve" their way of life, but to cure their cancer.

- I would like to know what happened after -- ie. How has Duke University improved its patient-care studies since then? How have they proceeded since that incident occurred? Did the school lose its credibility or have they earned it back?
