Week 6 Feedback

I’ve chosen to issue partial feedback sooner than complete feedback later, in case it will help you address issues with Week 8.

Best Practices

• Individual and shared work were both submitted on time, although your link template was added to the individual page a few days later.
• Almost all requisite links to and from the user page as well as page categories are present, except:
  • Your link template is still missing links to the actual assignment writeups. This is useful for grading because it allows us to toggle quickly to the assignment in case we need to look something up. Note from prior feedback that this missing link has been pointed out to you multiple times now.
• Electronic notebook was maintained.
• Work was submitted in only two submissions (not counting the very last one which only added the link template), and the summaries were not very descriptive.

Week 4 Feedback

• Work was submitted on time, with a small fix applied the next day.
• Most good-habit items are mostly fulfilled, with a couple of notable gaps:
  • All expected links and categories were noted, except for a link from your user page to the assignment. This has been pointed out a couple of times now, and really it is very easy to address—put it in your template! It is ultimately a small bit of effort, with the payoff that someone reading your pages will then have one-click access to many related pages.
  • Electronic notebook content was seen.
  • The summaries provided with your edits for this assignment swing too much toward the generic—e.g., “first edit” is sort of self-evident, so what was edited? This is like providing a commit message for code that says “modified code.” Remember that we are not forming this habit without purpose: in the end, you do want to get an idea, when looking at your edit history, about what contributions you have specifically been making to the wiki. Saying that something is an “edit” alone does not build that story.
  • Also, 4 edits is strikingly low for an assignment of this magnitude. Ideally you should break your work up into finer milestones.
• For the exercises, the following issues were seen; all others were correct:
  • The mRNA strand should not be complemented—you were already looking at the gene in the 5' to 3' direction, so that portion of the DNA is already mRNA-like.
  • Your translation approach is generally the right idea, but skimped a bit on how to form the full command. Your submission starts at the deletion and it took additional steps for me to integrate this with the earlier command sequences when checking your work. Ideally answers are self-contained and easily verifiable.
• Shared responses were provided and they came in on time.

Week 3 Feedback

• Work was submitted on time, with a few hours to spare. Make sure to continue maintaining that time buffer in the future, perhaps even increasing it as the topics advance.
• All good-habit items are fulfilled except one: there is no link from your user page to the assignment instructions page. Although that link is available elsewhere, it also does no harm to include a direct link from the user page, and is a great convenience for anyone who is reviewing your work. For maximum efficiency, include this in your “table of contents” template.
  • Beyond that, all expected links and categories were noted.
  • You were able to phase your work well, and consistently supplied a change summary to all of them.
  • You accompanied your work with electronic notes and processes.
• All exercises were performed or answered correctly, except for the –1, –2, and –3 reading frames—for those, you forgot to complement to strand because going in reverse means you are on a 3' to 5' strand. Remember to always factor biological characteristics and constraints into all attempts to computerize these processes.
• It’s great that you already appreciate how scale is one of the primary boons of modern computing. I don’t think this appreciation has gone quite mainstream yet.

Week 2 Feedback

• Although, the Week 2 scores have not yet been posted, I want to give you feedback on the assignment that you can incorporate to your your Week 3 submission.
• First, thank you for submitting your assignment on time.
• Your translations are correct; although it would have been better for completeness to go ahead and translate the rest of the sequence after the stop codon, in this case.
• You did not include anything by the way of an electronic notebook for this assignment. Although this assignment was pretty straightforward, you still need to document the process of what you did to arrive at the answers, not just supply the answers. Please be sure to do this for your Week 3 submission.
• You wrote something in the Summary field for 7/7 contributions between the Week 1 and Week 2 deadlines, keep up the good work! However, you completed the full assignment in only 4 edits to the wiki. You will want to consider saving your changes more frequently so that the granularity of the changes is smaller.
• For each week's assignment, you will need to create links from your User page to that week's assignment and to your individual and shared journal entries, as well as a link back from your individual journal entry and to the category "Journal Entry".
  • You are missing the link from your user page to the Week 2 assignment page.
  • You need to set up a template page that fulfills this part of the assignment. I.e., set up a template page called "Template:Jkoroda" where you list three sets of links: to each week's assignment page, to each week's individual journal page, and each week's class journal page, as well as a link to your User page and and the category "Journal Entry".
  • Then you should invoke this template on your User page and on each of your individual journal entry pages for each week.
  • You could even go ahead and create all of your future individual journal entry pages by invoking your template on them and never have to worry about losing points for this part of the assignment again.
• With regards to your comments on your shared journal entry, I knew that the Nirenberg article would be difficult for folks without a biology background, it was even difficult for those who did. However, I also think it's a good exercise to go back to the original source sometimes and read about discoveries from "the horse's mouth" so to speak.

Week 1 Feedback

• I answered your question on my User talk page.
• The scores have not been posted yet, but I wanted to give you feedback on your Week 1 Assignment.
• You did everything on time—with around half an hour to spare. Decent margin, but keep an eye on it as the assignments advance.
• Your assignment is complete except for one detail: you did not explicitly state your career interests and goals. I don’t think it’s a question of whether you can do this; but overall it is a good habit to treat homework instructions like specs to fulfill. Everything else came in great, and you only forgot to summarize your wiki changes once out of 32 times!
