The EGFR Protein

EGFR stands for "epidermal growth factor receptor." EGFR is a protein that is located on the surface of the cell and binds ligands and the epidermal growth factor. Mutations in the EGFR have been associated with lung cancer. EGFR is also able to function as a cell regulator which may explain why it is associated with cancer. When it is regulating the cell properly, it is a tumor suppressor. Lack of proper regulation could therefore lead to an association with lung cancer.

  1. I would assume that the purpose of this exercise was to familiarize myself with UniProt.
  2. I learned how the cross-ref links worked as well as how to narrow my search using the database.
  3. It seems like there is a lot of information to take in. I expected a large amount of information from the database, but even the amount of information for a single protein seems to be a bit daunting.
