Database Searches

Keyword search in each of the following databases:

  • PubMed
    • What original keyword(s) did you use? How many results did you get?
      • The keywords I used were: "yeast DNA freeze"
      • I got 130 results.
    • Which terms in which combinations were most useful to narrow down the search? How many results did you get after narrowing the search?
      • The terms which narrow down the search were: "yeast cold shock microarray". I got 6 results.
  • Google Scholar
    • What original keyword(s) did you use? How many results did you get?
      • The keywords I used were: "yeast DNA freeze"
      • I got 150,000 results.
    • Which terms in which combinations were most useful to narrow down the search? How many results did you get after narrowing the search?
      • The terms which narrow down the search were: "yeast cold shock microarray". I still got a lot of results: 31,600.
  • Web of Science
    • What original keyword(s) did you use? How many results did you get?
      • The keywords I used were: "yeast DNA freeze"
      • I got 166 results
    • Which terms in which combinations were most useful to narrow down the search? How many results did you get after narrowing the search?
      • The terms which narrow down the search were: "yeast cold shock microarray". I got 10 results.

Advanced search functions for each of these three databases/tools and answer the following:

  • PubMed
    • Which advanced search functions were most useful to narrow down the search? How many results did you get?
      • The most useful advanced search functions were narrowing the date and requiring the keywords be in the title and abstract. This narrowed my results down to 3.
  • Google Scholar
    • Which advanced search functions were most useful to narrow down the search? How many results did you get?
      • The most useful advanced search functions were narrowing the date and requiring that all keywords be used in the article. This narrowed my results to 12,500.
  • Web of Science
    • Which advanced search functions were most useful to narrow down the search? How many results did you get?
      • The most useful advanced search functions were using specific terms as well as narrowing the date range. This narrowed my results down to 3.

Acknowledgements

I worked with the project manager of our team, Hayden Hinsch, on this assignment. We figured out what we needed to do for the bibliography, as it was our job to work on that portion of the assignment. We also worked with our other team members, Arash Lari and Nicole Kalcic on the creation of our team page.
