Actin - Saccharomyces cerevisiae

ACT1 is protein also known as ABY1, END7 or its ordered locus name is YFL039C. Its source organism is a yeast called Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae referred to on this webpage is ATCC 204508 / S288c (Baker’s Yeast). ACT1 is responsible for encoding the essential gene for a cytoskeletal element, actin. Actin is an ATP binding protein that exists in all eukaryotic cells. It is expressed in monomeric (G-actin) and filamentous (F-actin) forms.

The easiest websites to use were SGD and UniProt due to their presentation. SGD has a lot of information on ACT1, and it can be accessed quickly by the different tabs on the gene’s page. UniProt identifies information easily through a good use of color and spacing. It was hard to find information on Ensembl, and the ACT1 information that was on the website was minimal (simple things like description, synonyms, etc). NCBI looks as if it has not been updated in 15 years. The website has a sufficient amount of information, but it wasn’t pleasant to navigate. It does, however, have a lot of links to external for more information regarding ACT1.

Across all platforms, the data that we looked through was the same. In other terms, some websites had more information, but the general information was consistent.

ACT1 encodes the single essential gene for actin, which is a structural protein expressed in all eukaryotic cells. It is involved in cytoskeletal functions such as cell polarization and endocytosis.
To be completely honest, ACT1 is the gene we were introduced to in the demonstration in class. Yet, we found it interesting that ACT1 is a structural protein.
